2nd Sports School BSKA Open Championship 2021

29 May 2021 – Brunei Shotokan Karate Association (BSKA), in collaboration with Sports School Brunei and supported by Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, organized a two-day tournament championship on 29-30 May 2021 at Multi-purpose Hall, Complex Program Khidmat Bakti Negara (PKBN), Batu Apoi, Temburong. The two-day championship was the first karate tournament that was organized in Brunei Darussalam since the ease of restriction on tournaments. Dr Haji Kamaruddin bin Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib welcomed Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Indera Negara Dato Seri Laila Jasa Pengiran Anak Haji Putih ibni Almarhum Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Muda Haji Muhammad Alam as Special Guest, consented to attend the event. The Guest of Honor, YM Pg Mohammad Amirrizal bin Pg Haji Mahmud, Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, presented medals to the winners. Among the invited guests were Matt Letham, Principal of Sports School Brunei, First Secretary of Japan Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, Senior Officials at the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. About 50 athletes participated in the Championship, which was sanctioned by Brunei Darussalam National Federation and supported by Progresif Sendirian Berhad, Ceramic Pro and FSCreate as the sponsors.

The objective of the championship is to provide opportunity to Sports School BSKA athletes a local tryout in preparation of their participation in future and international tournaments.

YAM Pengiran Indera Negara Dato Seri Laila Jasa Pg Anak Haji Putih also consented to present token of appreciation to Dr Hj Kamaruddin bin Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib and Dk Norain binte Pg Hj Ismail for their contributions in karate in Brunei Darussalam. Both had represented Brunei Darussalam in prestigious tournaments and have taken up important roles in the development of karate in Brunei Darussalam.

The event ended on a high note with the finals of the team kumite for male and female, and the match for Best of the Best that saw Sufizan Sofian from JBS Scheme and Amal Rafedah from Sports School BSKA as winners for these two categories for male and female respectively.
