Friday, 5th March 2021- The 17th International School Brunei Borneo Global Issues Conference (ISB BGIC) involves around 300 delegates from 22 schools across Brunei Darussalam. The conference is jointly hosted by The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and the International School Brunei (ISB), and will run from March 5 to March 8.
The school hosted a press conference to initiate the event at their campus in Sungai Hanching, introducing this year’s keynote speakers, Yang Mulia Haji Muhammad ‘Isamuddin Bin Abdullah Juna, Acting Director, Brunei Prisons Department; and Noorsurainah Tengah, Board Member, An-Nur Harapan, prior to the opening ceremony at the International Convention Centre, Berakas.
Haji Muhammad ‘Isamuddin bin Abdullah Juna current leads the Brunei Prisons Department as its interim Director in ensuring continuous organisational development towards enhancing the safe custody and rehabilitation of offenders in Brunei Darussalam with the mission: “To protect society with safe humane custody and ideal rehabilitation of inmates to become useful and responsible members of society”.
Noorsurainah Tengah is a Board Member of An-Nur Harapan. An-Nur Harapan underwent a strategy pivot in 2018 and repositioned itself while still remaining true to its purpose of driving lasting change in the community, families, individuals and nature. An-Nur Harapan rebooted by launching its currently active programme, UNIKLEARN.
UNIKLEARN is a year long training and internship programme that aims to help trainees with social, basic living and vocational skills. Its goal is to empower differently abled adults to live independent lives.
Officials representing the sponsors – Mr Raymin Othman, Production Unit Manager (Utilities) of Brunei LNG and Johan Bin Dato Dr Haji Johar (Chief Corporate Strategy Officer) from Progresif Sdn Bhd Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd and Progresif Sdn Bhd have continued to be the main sponsors for this year’s event.
The event is also sponsored by Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd. and Brunei Cement, with support from TLT Enterprise, Interhouse, D’Sunlit and Brunei Press Sdn. Bhd. Also in attendance were, ISB Executive Principal Laura Thomas, ISB BGIC Coordinator Jane Snell, and ISB BGIC Secretary-General Lathif Aziz.
This year’s ISB BGIC focuses on the 10th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG10) – Reduced Inequalities. Delegates will debate and decide on resolutions to address inequalities based on race, gender, age and educational opportunities. These inequalities have worsen since the COVID-19 pandemic, which has deepened inequalities of wealth, opportunities, accessibilities, and a range of other societal measures.
Delegates have worked tirelessly over recent months to research their topics and prepare speeches for the conference itself.
ISB BGIC is an annual student-led Model United Nations style conference where participants represent countries to address various views on current, real world issues. This initiative is aimed at the development of students’ understanding of global citizenship and critical skills in research, public speaking and negotiation.
